Nueva Andalucía is one of the most popular residential areas of Marbella. The reasons are simple: peaceful, leafy streets and homes overlooking golf courses in a beautiful green valley with mountain and sea views; a perfect location close to Puerto Banús, beaches and Marbella town; and a first-class choice of properties and close-at-hand amenities.

Origins

When Alfonso von Hohenlohe – the Spanish-German aristocrat who put Marbella on the map as an internationally desirable high-end destination on the Mediterranean – first came to these parts, Nueva Andalucía was still a country estate outside of what was then a small town. The farm was known as Nueva Andalucía (New Andalusia) and surrounded by fields of sugarcane and pastures some distance from the Marbella Club, where the first jet-set development of tourism began.

The Golden Mile – an elegant boulevard leading westwards out of Marbella – would evolve as a chic address from the Marbella Club Hotel, and by the time the new marina of Puerto Banús was completed at its western end, Nueva Andalucía too began to stir to development. It’s attractive setting and scenic surroundings were discovered and before long luxury villas and the first of a series of attractive apartment and townhouse complexes were built here.

The process gathered momentum in the 1980s, when Nueva Andalucía took on its current form, and gradually this ‘frontier’ area became an appealing residential zone – in fact, in time it was to become Marbella’s main residential suburb. By the 1990s Nueva Andalucía was well established as such, and even now, as the newest developments edge into hillier terrain on its north side, it remains a popular place for people to build, renovate and buy existing homes – offering as ever a sense of space and close proximity to nature.

The ‘Golf Valley’

Among the early developers of Nueva Andalucía was Don José Banús, a major property developer from Madrid who was also responsible for the creation of Puerto Banús and its marina. He envisaged a golf club in the heart of Nueva Andalucía, and so built the Club de Golf Nueva Andalucía in 1968 – two years before the opening of the yacht harbour. None other than Robert Trent Jones Senior designed the course, which was later renamed the Real Club de Golf Las Brisas, and which continues to be one of the gems of the sport in Europe.

In 1975 another classic, the Aloha Golf Club, was opened, just three kilometres inland from Puerto Banús and sprawling along undulating verdant terrain dotted with Mediterranean style vegetation and views of La Concha Mountain and the sea. Designed by Javier Arana, it began the concentration of golf courses in Nueva Andalucía, and when the Los Naranjos Golf Club was added on the western side in 1977 the Golf Valley was born. It is an almost complete continuation of green-carpeted fairways lined with luxurious villas and overlooked by equally exclusive apartment complexes – the very heart of what has become Europe’s Costa del Golf.

Much later, the nine-hole Magna Golf Marbella was added on land overlooking the little town of San Pedro Alcántara, the mighty coastal mountain ranges and the shoreline stretching towards Gibraltar, at the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean. These golf courses, with their luxurious clubhouses, restaurants/cafés, pro shops, academies, and social amenities, add to the lifestyle and character of Nueva Andalucía to create a unique offering of golf and nature-related residential living within minutes of beaches and all amenities.

Amenities

Another reason why Nueva Andalucía is so popular is the excellent array of amenities on your doorstep – quite apart from the many to be found in nearby Puerto Banús, San Pedro Alcántara, and Marbella town.

They include supermarkets, shops, excellent restaurants, cafés, bars, nightlife, pharmacies, hair salons and clinics, with a concentration of venues in Aloha and also the Centro Plaza commercial centre offering a convenient hub of services. The latter also includes banks, law and accountancy firms, doctors, dentists, sports clubs, and one of the finest international schools on the Costa del Sol, Aloha College. In short, you needn’t leave Nueva Andalucía for practical reasons, though the surrounding areas are conveniently close by as well.

The broad range of property types, sizes, orientations, styles and prices also makes this such an attractive area to live and own a property, ranging from apartments and penthouses to townhouses, semi-detached villas, single homes and luxurious mansions.
